    Get PDF
Architects can influence workplace behaviours and manoeuvre workers’ emotions through aligning design strategies with human moods. Design sustains organizational well-being through strengthening space occupants’ empowerment, leading to better work performances. Issue: Existing research has limited empirical evidence on the impact of personal empowerment (PE) on organizational opportunity (OO). Purpose: This paper aims to verify the statistical predictability of OO based on PE. Approach: Multiple Correlation and Multiple Linear Regression were carried out to assess linear associations and parameters of linear equations to predict OO components based on PE items. Findings: OO components were predictable by the majority of the PE items and ‘monitoring behaviours to suit with situation’ was the strongest predictor of OO

Designers have long adopted the knowledge from the field of psychology to expand architectural space’s emotional impacts. Appropriate design strategies can improve and sustain well-being through instilling the sense of empowerment, leading to positive relationships among space occupants. Issue: A large body of the literature has sought to provide a conclusive empirical assessment on the predictability of attitudes and behaviours in positive relationships (PR) through personal empowerment (PE). Purpose: This paper intends to determine the predictability of PR based on PE. Approach: Multiple Correlation and Multiple Linear Regression were conducted to estimate linear associations and parameters of linear equations to predict PR components based on PE items. Findings: Components of PR were predictable by the majority of the PE items and ‘monitoring behaviours to suit with situation’ was the strongest predictor of PR

This study proposes a supply chain model for the Excecutive Development Center of Universiti Utara Malaysia (EDC-UUM) to enhance the usability and the visibility of EDC-UUM, thus increasing the demand for EDC-UUM services and indirectly, the profit as well. Specifically, this study embarks on two objectives which are to determine the resources available and opportunities that can be grabbed to strengthen the functions and usability of EDC-UUM and to develop a supply chain model for EDC-UUM that will incorporate all the resources and opportunities so that the demand for and the utilization of the training/seminar rooms and hotel rooms increases. To achieve the first objective, a SWOT analysis was conducted by assessing the current practice and future plans of EDC-UUM. The second objective was achieved by studying the characteristic of a hotel supply chain, and then mapping the supply chain to suit the characteristics of EDC-UUM. In this report, the supply chain model focuses only on the first tier for EDC-UUM's product development that directly involves the use of local community members

HapPart: partitioning algorithm for multiple haplotyping from haplotype conflict graph

    Get PDF
Each chromosome in the human genome has two copies. The haplotype assembly challenge entails reconstructing two haplotypes (chromosomes) using aligned fragments genomic sequence. Plants viz. wheat, paddy and banana have more than two chromosomes. Multiple haplotype reconstruction has been a major research topic. For reconstructing multiple haplotypes for a polyploid organism, several approaches have been designed. The researchers are still fascinated to the computational challenge. This article introduces a partitioning algorithm, HapPart for dividing the fragments into k-groups focusing on reducing the computational time. HapPart uses minimum error correction curve to determine the value of k at which the growth of gain measures for two consecutive values of k-multiplied by its diversity is maximum. Haplotype conflict graph is used for constructing all possible number of groups. The dissimilarity between two haplotypes represents the distance between two nodes in graph. For merging two nodes with the minimum distance between them this algorithm ensures minimum error among fragments in same group. Experimental results on real and simulated data show that HapPart can partition fragments efficiently and with less computational time

A review on sustainable wellbeing indicators for human interrelationships with the environment

    Get PDF
The environment should appear not only as a commodity to humans but as an inspiring source that appeals to humans’ ethical ability. In Malaysia, studies concerning factors influencing pro-environmental behaviours are vast. However, studies on interrelationships between humans and the contextual surroundings are scarce. Towards achieving sustainable well-being, it is undoubtedly important for humans to have conforming emotions, behaviours, cognitions and motivations towards the environment. This study intends to identify the determinants of human values and ethical behaviour concerning the environment towards developing a theoretical framework of interrelationship between human and environment

Sustainable well-being: an empirical exploration on human needs and human interdependency

    Get PDF
This study is a part of an ongoing research to discover subjective indicators of sustainable well-being for Malaysia. Initial findings recognized two important notions of subjective measures of sustainable well-being. The first notion suggested that sustainable well-being manifested in human interdependency. The second notion suggested that human interdependency is attained when human needs are fulfilled. Maslow’s Hierarchy of Needs was adopted to indicate the stages and examples of each needs. There were eight stages of human needs which were adapted into 24 common human needs substituted under eight components of three human needs dimensions. The dimensions were (i) basic necessities, (ii) complimentary needs, and (iii) desired opportunities. It was hypothesized that human needs influence the level of human interdependency. This paper delivers an empirical analysis testing the effects of human needs on human interdependency. The study intends to determine the influence of human needs on human interdependency. Questionnaire survey was conducted and 894 reliable samples were gathered. 192 Independent Sample T-Tests were conducted to determine statistical difference in levels of eight components of human interdependency, between respondents who claimed difficult and respondents who claimed easy to attain 24 human needs in the past year. There were statistically significant differences in most of the components of human interdependency between groups of 24 human needs. The empirical study conducted in the central regions of a developing and multicultural country, Malaysia, is a useful reference to subjective well-being studies piloted in areas of similar characteristics

This paper presents the elbow flexion and extension rehabilitation exercise system using marker-less Kinect-based method. The proposed exercise system is developed for the upper limb rehabilitation application that utilizes a low cost depth sensor. In this study, the Kinect skeleton tracking method is used to detect and track the joints of upper limb and then measure the angle of the elbow joint. The users perform the exercise in front of the Kinect sensor and the computer monitor. At the same time, they can see the results that displayed on the screen in real-time. The measurement of elbow joint angles are recorded automatically and has been compared to the reference values for the analysis and validation. These reference values are obtained from the normal range of motion (ROM) of the elbow. The results show the average flexion angle of the elbow joint that achieved by the normal user is 139.1° for the right hand and 139.2° for the left hand. Meanwhile, the average extension angle is 1.72° for the right hand and 2.0° for the left. These measurements are almost similar to the standard range of motion (ROM) reference values. The skeleton tracking works well and able to follow the movement of the upper arm and forearm in real-time
